Ro-Ro shipping

Mode of sea transport where vehicles drive directly onto the ship.

Full glossary

Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) is a maritime transport mode specially designed for wheeled vehicles. Unlike container transport, vehicles are driven or towed directly into the ship's holds via ramps.

Advantages of Ro-Ro for exporting military vehicles:
- Lower cost than containers by 20 to 40% for large vehicles
- No height limit: ideal for tipper trucks, cranes, vehicles with raised equipment
- Fast loading: no metal-box handling
- Suitable for non-containerisable vehicles: construction plant, heavy haulers

Major Ro-Ro ports for Africa:
- Europe: Le Havre, Antwerp, Zeebrugge, Emden
- West Africa: Dakar, Abidjan, Cotonou, Lomé, Tema, Lagos

Lys Tout Terrain regularly uses Ro-Ro transport to export heavy trucks and oversized vehicles to Africa.
