Sea freight

Transport of goods by international sea route.

Full glossary

Sea freight is the mode of transport used to export military vehicles to Africa. It accounts for nearly all shipments thanks to its competitive cost and its ability to carry heavy vehicles.

Types of containers used:
- 20-foot container: suitable for 1 light to compact vehicle
- 40-foot container: 2 light vehicles or 1 truck without a body
- Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off): vehicles drive directly into the ship — cheaper, suitable for vehicles too large for containers
- Flat rack: for very wide or very tall vehicles

Main African ports:
- France: Le Havre, Marseille, Nantes
- Belgium: Antwerp (heavily used for West Africa)
- West Africa: Dakar, Abidjan, Cotonou, Lomé, Tema
- Central/East Africa: Douala, Mombasa, Dar-es-Salaam

Lys Tout Terrain handles vehicle preparation for export (protection, lashing) and coordinates with partner freight forwarders for all African ports.
