The Land Rover Defender (formerly Land Rover Series, then Defender from 1990) is one of the most-produced and most-used 4x4s in the world, in both civilian and military contexts.
Main military versions:
- Defender 90 (short wheelbase, 2 doors): liaison and command vehicle
- Defender 110 (long wheelbase, 4 doors): 5 to 9-seat capacity, ambulance or cargo variant
- Defender 127/130 (very long): flatbed, ambulance, logistics use
Engines:
- 2.5 TDi (until 1994) then Td5 (1999-2007), 2.2 TDCi and 2.4 TDCi (2007-2016)
- Left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) available
The military Defender has equipped many armies: United Kingdom, France (sold as the P4 for the Peugeot 4×4), Belgium, Australia, and dozens of African and Asian countries. Its mechanical simplicity and the global availability of parts make it an ideal choice for isolated areas.
