An 8x8 is a heavy vehicle with 4 axles, all 8 wheels of which are driven. This is the most rugged military configuration, used for the heaviest loads in difficult terrain.
Among the best-known military 8x8s:
- MAN KAT1 8x8: heavy military logistics truck of the German army, payload up to 10 tonnes off-road, ideal for mines and forestry sites
- Berliet TBU / BM24: French 8x8 trucks used by the French army in the 1960s-1980s
- AM General LMTV 8x8: logistics vehicle of the US army
In Africa, 8x8s are particularly sought after for gold and diamond mines in remote areas, for petroleum projects in equatorial terrain, and for humanitarian transport in conflict zones.
