Payload

Maximum loading weight authorised for a vehicle.

Full glossary

The payload of a vehicle is the maximum mass that the vehicle is authorised to carry in addition to its own weight (kerb weight). It is calculated as follows:

Payload = GVW − Kerb weight

  • GVW: Gross Vehicle Weight (total maximum mass of vehicle + load)
  • Kerb weight: mass of the vehicle alone, without load or passengers

Examples of payloads of common military vehicles:
- Peugeot P4: ~400 kg
- Renault TRM 2000: 2,000 kg (2 tonnes)
- Renault TRM 10000: 10,000 kg (10 tonnes)
- Berliet GBC 180: 6,000 kg (6 tonnes)

Payload is an essential criterion for African buyers carrying heavy goods. Military trucks generally have payloads much higher than their civilian equivalents of the same size, thanks to their rugged construction.
