How to choose your 6x6 military truck
TRM 10000, GBC 180, Unimog: the expert comparison guide
The three main families of 6x6 military trucks
The 6x6 military truck market is dominated by three families of models:
Renault TRM 10000: The most modern (1983-2000), the most used by the current French army. 10-tonne payload, 214 hp engine, comfortable cab. The most expensive but the easiest to maintain with parts still available.
Berliet GBC 180: The veteran (1966-1978), the most widespread in Africa. Mechanically simpler, easier to repair on-site. 6-tonne payload, less powerful engine but very reliable. Parts hard to find.
Mercedes Unimog: Maximum versatility, off-road capability superior to the other two thanks to its portal axles. Available in many configurations (U900, U1300, U1700). Parts available worldwide — a crucial advantage.
Which criterion to choose by use?
The right choice depends on your use:
For heavy transport (10+ tonnes) → TRM 10000: the highest payload of the three, the most comfortable cab for long trips.
For very isolated areas → GBC 180 or Unimog: mechanically simpler, easier to repair without sophisticated tools. The GBC in particular can be repaired by any experienced African mechanic.
For versatile use → Unimog: its PTO and many configurations let you fit it as a crane, tanker or platform depending on needs.
For a tight budget → GBC 180: it is the cheapest to buy and can often be found in good condition for €8,000 to €15,000.
For long-term parts availability → Unimog: Mercedes parts available worldwide, including in Africa.

Frequently asked questions
Can you still find GBC 180 trucks in good condition?
Yes, but they are increasingly rare. Good examples have generally been overhauled and have less than 80,000 km. The condition of the cab and chassis is decisive. Lys Tout Terrain regularly offers overhauled GBCs.
Can the TRM 10000 carry 10 tonnes on an African dirt track?
Officially, the payload is 10 tonnes on road and 7.5 tonnes off road. In practice on difficult African tracks, reducing the load to 6-8 tonnes is recommended to preserve the vehicle.
